Phonemic Awareness:
The ability to hear, identify,
and manipulate the individual
sounds in spoken words. It also
includes work with rhymes,
words, syllables, and onsets (the onset of bag is b ).
and rimes (the rime of bag is ag).

Blending sounds together
to make
words.
Separating and counting sounds in words.
|
Phonics/Decoding:
The using the systematic and predictable
relationships between written letters and spoken sounds to read words.
|
Blending short a,e, and u
words
Words with l and r clusters like clap and dress.
Learning sounds for sh,ch,th, wh, and tch.
Final blends nd, ng, nk, and like send, bang,
and bank .

Comprehension:
Understanding what has been read.
|
Skills: compare and
contrast, sequence of events, drawing conclusions, cause and effect
Strategies:
summarizing, evaluate, question, monitor/clarify
|
Fluency:
Reading smoothly with normal speaking pace,
phrasing, and expression.
|
Demonstrated by teacher.
Developed by repeated readings of familiar text.
Repeated readings of stories that are at child's instructional level.
|
Vocabulary:
Understanding the meaning of words used in
speaking
and reading. It is a very important part fo comprehension.
|
Words in the following
topics will be developed: sensory, exclamatory, question, noise, size,
social studies, weather, state and country names, and antonyms
|
High Frequency Words:
Words that occur most often in stories and
often do
not sound out. They must be recognized by sight. (Examples are: the,
you, how).
|
children, come, family,
father, love, mother, people, picture, you, know, friend, play, read,
she, sing, today, write, car, down, hear, hold, hurt, learn, their,
walk, would, grow, long, light more, other, right, room, small,
these, could, house, how, over, own, her, little, try, was, our,
fly.

Spelling and Phonics:
Using letters, letter clusters, word roots,
vowel
patterns, prefixes and suffixes to correctly spell words.
|
Short vowels: a, e, u.
Words spelled with sh and ch
Long a and i sound.
