3Enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve on 31 Aug 1942 at USNRS Detroit, MI, for 2 years. Was sent to USN Training Station Great Lakes, IL on 5 Sept 1942, and placed on Active Duty. Entered class on 2 Nov 1942 for 16 weeks. On 6 Oct 1942, a request to transfer MADER for a different course of instruction. On 29 Oct 1942,3 the transfer was made for him to train as a Machinist's Mate. Date of separation of school was 22 Feb 1943, with completion of course of study at the Class "A' Service School in Group III and Subgroup IIIa, and with final marks at 90.62% and graduationg number 102 in class of 489. On 26 Feb 1943, MADER was transferred to U.S.RecShip San Francisco, CA for assignment duty by SERFORSUBORDCOMPAC. On 8 Mar 1943, he was sent to AdvNavBase, Noumea, N.C., where he was put on the USS Medusa on 25 May 1943, before finding his "home" on the destroyer, the USS Wilson (DD-408) on 8 Jun 1943, as an MM2c. On 31 Dec 1943, he was promoted to MM3c. He served during WWII on this ship until his transfer to Receiving Station, Navy #3150 for FFT to the United States for FFT to PSC Great Lakes for discharge due to his expiration of enlistment.
