| Following is Norton Taylor's writings as received from Jerome Taylor, son of Norton Taylor, on 10 October 2001. Transcribed from photocopy of original by Alicia Jensen, 11 October, 2001. Please note, that any text in (parenthesis) was put there by me, Alicia, and are not the original writing of Norton Taylor. It appears to me, that my Uncle Norton planned on writing more, as after the first paragraph he wrote what appears to be an outline for what he planned to write. Unfortunately, it is assumed that he never did write any more than what is included below. --- "Alicia, Enclosed is a copy of what my father wrote. Regards, Jerry" --- The year was 1914, my Dad (Jacob TALALAY) received a letter from America, the Land of opportunity and freedom and life is pleasant and free. His brother in laws and sister in laws and my Grandmother (Feiga/Fanny HANKIN DISKIN) are getting together and sending him a ticket for passage to America. The plan was for him to go right away, get work, pay off for the passage, save money and send passage tickets for the rest of the family. This consisted of my mother (Sosha DISKIN TALALAY) , three sisters, one still an infant, and myself. 2 - war breaks out 3 - separation 4 - mother had to support the family of five 5 - the strug(g)les 6 - Finally passage to America 7 - Ellis Island &Ferry Sight of Statue of Liberty 8 - Depression But this plan was not to be. A few months after my father arrived in U.S.A. war breaks out. We were separated from my father and didn't hear from him for almost nine years. My mother had to find a way how to feed and clothe the family of five. First she sold her diamonds and jewelry little by little. When this source was exhausted she started to bake sweet rolls, challah and other pastries and deliver them to her customer. Meanwhile, the war was not going well for Russia and the Tsar with his family moved to our city, Mogilev, so that he was closer to his general staff. We kids saw him and his family almost every day as they went horseback riding or on boat excursions. The war was getting worse and in 1917 a revolution broke out. People demanded that Parliament be formed. As I was coming home from school in spring of 1917, I had to cross a park near the Palace, where the Tsar lived and I saw a big car standing near the Palace and the Tsar taken into it. Later I found out he abdicated in favor of his brother and parliament formed. Kerensky has taken charge of the Parliament and was part of the Government. After a civil war, the Bolsheviks or Com(m)unists under Lenin & Trotsky defeated the Kerensky Government. The(y) established a com(m)unist government. It took 9 years of separation from my father before we could go to America and reunite with my Father. It happened in Aug. 1923. ------------------------------ | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
