Nun celebrates 50 years at monastery
SISTER MARY DOROTHY NEUHOFER
CLAIM TO FAME:
50-year member of the Benedictine Sisters at Holy Name Monastery
WHY SHE CHOSE THE SISTERHOOD:
She felt that God was calling her to serve him more in-depth than she would have been able to had she not joined the sisterhood.
HER ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
She is director and archivist at Cannon Memorial Library of Saint Leo University, where she was recently honored for 35 years of service..
As supervisor of grounds for Holy Name Monastery, a position she has held since 1975. Neuhofer has assisted with the Diversified Co-operative Training Program and National Future Farmers of America Program at Pasco High School, Providing students with co-operative work experience.
Prior to her years with Saint Leo University, she was a teacher and school principal, working in Florida Catholic schools from 1951-64. She taught students in kindergarten through junior high school in Sarasota, North Miami, North Miami Beach, Ocala, Jacksonville Beach and Venice.
She is a former prioress, having served as the superior of her community of sisters from 1972-75.
She is a member of the Pasco County Historical Preservation Committee and has written a brief history of the St. Joseph and another book on Benedictine libraries.
SOME BACKGROUND:
Neuhofer is a direct descendant of a founding family of St. Joseph.
She attended St. Joseph Public School and Holy Name Academy in St. Leo, where she was taught by the Benedictine Sisters of the Holy Name.
She became a member of the community of Benedictine Sisters at Holy Name Monastery in St. Leo in 1950.
She has a bachelor's degree in education from Barry College (now Berry University) in Miami;
a master's degree in library science from Rosary College (now Dominican University in River Forest, Ill.;
a master; degree in canon law from Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. and
a Ph.D. in library studies from Florida State University in Tallahassee.
She serves on the executive board of the Catholic Library Association and was recently elected vice president/president-elect.
