On the Net

For those who may not be familiar with the term ‘Apologetics," allow me to introduce it to you. The term comes from the Greek word "Apologia" which means "to defend." So, we find that Socrates defends himself at the court of Athens in Plato’s "The Apology of Socrates."

As Christians, we are commanded by the Holy Spirit through the apostle Peter to: "give an answer (apologia) to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have." (1 Pet 3:15). Jude also tells us to "contend earnestly for the faith" (Jude 1:3). And Paul, by example, shows us we are to use evidence to convince and persuade (Acts 18:4; 28:23) people of the truth of Christianity. He used fulfilled prophecy, miracle, philosophical arguments, and especially the evidence for the resurrection. In fact, as we read the book of Acts, we find that there is no sermon given by an apostle that does not include some sort of apologetical appeal.

In the 20th century, we have an opportunity that has not been available in past times. Through computers and the Internet, Christians can access and dispense information around the world in a matter of moments. Christians now have the ability to encounter people they never would be able to meet in a lifetime of travels. Through the Internet we can communicate the Gospel through E-mail, over chat lines, on forums, and with high tech multimedia presentations on web sites. The possibilities are endless.

Along with our opportunity to present the Gospel comes the opportunity for other religions, cults, and Atheists to present their positions in contradiction to Christianity. It is incumbent upon the Christian to present and defend the Gospel. We should seek not only to convey the spiritual aspects of Christianity, but also the fact that the Christian position holds the intellectual high ground. The Christian can say, not only with inward conviction, but with outward rational demonstrations, that Jesus is the way, the truth, the life, and no one comes to God the Father except through Him. Only the Christian can offer both peace to the soul, and confidence to the mind.
