Modern Theological Liberalism is not to be confused with political liberalism. The two are very different creatures.
Modern Theological Liberalism got its start in the early to mid 1800's in Tubingen, Germany. Its focus then, and now, has been to rid the Biblical accounts of the miraculous. So, we find in Liberal theology that the miracles preformed by God for Moses did not occur. Neither did the miracles of Jesus, nor did his resurrection. In the same vein we find that Jesus could not have been God incarnate.
During the late 1800's and into the early 1900's this theology, and I use the term loosely, was held at bay by some of the best scholars that the Christian church had seen since Thomas Aquinas. In Europe we had J.B. Lightfoot and B.F. Westcott. In the USA we had B.B. Warfield, Charles Hodge and his nephew A.A. Hodge. But, all of these great minds of the Christian Church did something that left the historic Christian faith virtually defenseless against the onslaught of Liberalism. By the 2nd decade of the twentieth century they had all died. Yes, there were a few left to carry on, such as J. Gresham Machen, but there were to few to counter the Liberal tidal wave that was sweeping over Europe and into the USA.
Today we find many of the mainline Protestant Churches have all but succumb to these heretical teachings. We currently find the greatest proponents of Liberal Theology at the Westar Institute, home of the Jesus Seminar.
