Millions around the world showed their disgust at US militarism and armed aggression. The Dutchess Greens Action Group organized a Peace Train of 800 activists that left from Poughkeepsie for the demonstration in New York City. Lacking permits to march, peace activists filled up 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Avenues for 25 blocks. It was power to the people as the police barricades just vanished beneath a million feet. We the people demand peace, and we will not be denied.
The peace train...an eight car Metro-North train chartered by several pro peace groups, including the Dutchess Greens, to transport people to the rally, left Poughkeepsie at 9:23 a.m. It and the two regularly scheduled trains on either side of it were packed to capacity, according to Metro-North spokesman Dan Brucker.
Together with the traffic on the New Haven line from Connecticut, Brucker said this was "one of the largest, if not the largest" movements of people for a single purpose in the railroad's history. The Hudson line trains arrived at Grand Central with close to 3,000 people. The New Haven line brought about 2,000 people to the rally. |
