On rare occasions, severe thunder storms move through here with massive bolts of lightning. Sometimes, we hear a very loud crack of thunder nearby which usually means one of our trees has been struck by lightning. Lightning has also struck our TV and our satellite dish.
I have noticed about 10 large trees on our property that have been stuck by lightning. The bark is usually split from the ground up to about 40 feet along one side of the tree. The wood is yellowish tinted with blue.
Contrary to what looks like fatal damage, a lightning struck ponderosa pine continues to thrive. I have noticed that lightning damage does NOT make the tree more susceptible to pine beetle damage or other diseases. |
