The following photographs show initial pine beetle damage. The white and pink globs of sap are called "pop corn". This is the ponderosa pine's response to the boring of the pine beetles. The tree attempts to "pitch out" the pine beetle. We have had ponderosa pines successfully withstand attacks by the pine beetles. However, trees attacked by 50 or more pine beetles at once usually cannot defend themselves against such an onslaught.
This ponderosa pine was attacked by pine beetles in the summer of 2000. The "popcorn" shown here is about 6 feet up the trunk.
This the same tree about 30 feet up the trunk. The pine beetles attack both high and low.
