Homeschooling Elective Ideas and Tips

Elective Ideas:

Here are some ideas for elective, enriching classes outside the regular reading, writing, math, science and social studies. One good idea is to start by asking the student. What are their interests? What would they enjoy learning? What would help them on their path to their goals?

* Home Economics (Cooking, Sewing, Home Life Skills, etc.)

* Music Lessons or Music Appreciation (See our Music Page!)

* Woodshop

* Various Sports

* YMCA or other Community Courses

* Art, Crafts, and other Creative Classes (See our Art Page!)

* Animal Care

* 4-H and other Club Projects (Scouts, etc)

* Volunteering for the Library or a Non-Profit Organization

* Website Development

* Gardening

* Home Decorating

* Fashion Design

* Travel

These are just a few of the many ideas for elective "classes" to enrich a homeschool student's life and education. Resources for all these things are available online, through homeschool groups, through community classes, with help from family members, with books, and more. Field trips are also great fun and learning opportunities. Ask around!

SEWING LINKS

Sewing is a fun hobby and a useful skill for both guys and girls. There are books you can find to teach sewing at home, simple patterns at the fabric store, online classes and more. Smaller children can begin by sewing small craft items and older students can eventually advance to sewing clothing, home decor and more. Happy stitching!
