Writing on Creative Writing
People seem to come in two versions when it comes to writing: They either love it or they hate it. Creative writing is a place
where all people can shine, whether or not they like traditional report and essay writing, handwriting, grammar, and all that
other more "serious" type writing.
Creative writing is a time to let the mind run free. Poetry, song lyrics, crazy nonsense words, funny writing, writing comics,
writing scripts to puppet shows or for drama... all this falls under the heading of creative writing. Creative writing should
be fun. It should free the spirit. It can be private, as in journal writing. It can be free-writing that may seem at first
to make no sense. It can be unwritten, but memorized, acted out, or taped into a recorder. Perhaps in some cases creative
"writing" can come out in the form of art, drawing, painting, sculpture and what the artist has to "say" about the meaning
of the creation.
Be open to new ideas when trying creative writing or introducing the concept to students. Creative writing should be freeing,
not restrictive. There are no rules.
Read some poetry. Listen to song lyrics. Stare at shadows on the wall made by fireplace flames and let the mind wander. The
thoughts that come to mind are the sparks of creative writing. And with time and patience, it will come.
