skills your Kindergartener will be learning this month. At Taku we use
the ASD reading program developed by Houghton
Mifflin publishers.

Target Skills

Phonemic Awareness:
The ability to hear, identify,
and manipulate the individual
sounds in spoken words. It also
includes work with rhymes,
words, syllables, and onsets (the onset of bag is b ).
and rimes (the rime of bag is ag).

- Hearing and identifying beginning sounds of words.
- Blending short a words
- Learning sounds of letters h, v, c, p, g, f
- Blending onsets and rhymes.
- Segmenting onsets and rhymes

Phonics/Decoding:
The using the systematic and predictable
relationships between written letters and spoken sounds to read words.

- Learning to connect the written letters h, v, c, p,
g, f with their sounds.
|
Comprehension:
Understanding what has been read.
|
- Skills:
Text organization, sequence of events, cause and effect, story
structure: beginning, middle, end
- Strategies:
Predict/infer, summarize, phonics/decoding, evaluate

Concepts
of Print:
Knowledge how printed language works. Some
examples
are: where to begin to read, what is a word, letter, punctuation, anad
direction to read.

- Word spacing
- First/last letter in a written word.
- Match spoken words to print
- Distinguish letter, word, sentence
|
Vocabulary:
Understanding the meaning of words used in
speaking
and reading. It is a very important part of comprehension.

- Words that show position, action, describe, rhyme
|
High Frequency Words:
Words that occur most often in stories and
often do
not sound out. They must be recognized by sight. (Examples are: the,
you, how).

Using words for instant recall.
