Repairing old negatives

There is known technique to conceal scratches on the hegatives, by immersing it in the fluid. Fluid fills the scratches and eliminates the refraction. I have a few B/W negatives, that are badly scratched. ICE doesn't work on silver negatives, so I decided to try this optical approach.
I got QuikStik clear packaging tape at the local grocery, wet the film with 90% isopropyl alcohol and applied the tape on the both sides. Press the tape firmly. It is important to get rid of the air bubbles. You can use the tape roll to tide the tape on the film.

Here is fragment of unrepaired negative (scanned at 2750 dpi with Nikon LS-30):

(I told you it was really bad film)

If you decide to use this technique, try it on low-value negative first.

Note that the sticky layer may destroy the emulsion with time, so you better keep the scan files on CD.
