West Upton woman 100 yrs.old today
West Upton,Aug.11-Surrounded by members of her family,Mrs.Emily Ann (Attwood) Young will tommorrow observe her 100th birthday anniversary. A family observance is planned for  that day at the home of her son,ex-selectman Alfred Young,Maple Ave.where she has resided the past few years. It is not expected that all the 73 members of her family will be present, although it is expected that her six sons and two daughters will attend and some of the 19 grandchildren and 25 great- grandchildren.
At her birthday anniversary last year Mrs.Young was in the best of health for one of her years. She helped with the cooking and general housework. Since that time, she has fallen and the shock has kept her confined to her bedroom until this spring, when she was able to come downstairs. Aside from poor eyesight and slight deafness, Mrs.Young is in good health.
On Friday,Aug 3 , when her son Alfred mentioned that he was going to Milford to do weekly shopping, she informed Mr. Young that she would accompany him for the ride.
Mrs. Young was born in Luton,Bedfordshire, England the daughter of Daniel and Susannah (Huckle) Attwood, one of a long-lived family, her father attaining the age of 91. She recieved the customary education of the times in England. On May 19,1885, she married William Young and in 1857 the couple, accompanied by thier 13 month old daughter,Fannie set out for the United States in a sailing vessel. After a trip of 30 days they landed in New York.
At the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861 Mr. and Mrs. Young accompanied by their daughter and two sons returned by steamer to England. For many years the story of how they ran the blockades outside of the harbors of this country was told by Mr. and Mrs. Young and by the daughter,Mrs. Fannie Gardner of Milford,Conn.
The couple and their children returned on a sailing vessel in 1863. Their trip of 42 days was marked by terrific storms. The family was told that had the sails of their vessel been new they would never have reached port. Shreds of the sail were for many years kept by the family
Mr.Young died 30 years ago while the family resided in Westboro. He had learned the dyers trade in hat plants in Foxboro,Franklin, and Milford Conn.
Of the 11 children born to Mr. and Mrs.Young eight are living. These are Mrs. Gardner, Mrs.Edith Woodbury of Milford,Conn;Ex-Selectman Samuel Young of West Upton, Henry of West Duxbury, Edgar of Franklin, Mass; Fred of Medfield,Daniel of Chicago.
Mrs.Young is an honorary member of the Columbian Chapter,O.E.S.,of Upton, and Westboro Unitarian Ladies Alliance.
