History of Society
The Washington County Genealogical Society was organized on August 5, 1997 at the Nancy Carol Roberts Memorial Library. Around 60 people were present and elected officers who appointed a committee to draw up some By-Laws. The First major project of the Genealogical Society was the re-publication of two popular books that had long been out of print. The History of Brenham and Washington County published in 1915 by Mrs. R. E., Pennington amd The Cemeteries of Washington County compiled and published by Nath and Judy Winfield of Chappell Hill. Later a new publication was introduced containing the Washington County Marriages dating back to 1836 The society has generated a profit from the sale of the books and has used the proceeds to enhance the resources of the Genealogy Room. Some of these new resources include 57 volumes of the World Family Tree on C. D. Rom along with a number of other C. D. Roms containing Social Security Records, Marriage Records, Immigration Records. And Census Indexes, all complete with the cabinet. Charles and Joy Blake, members of our society were able to secure two Exxon grants and along with some private contibutions of their own provided microfilms of the Census Records for all Texas Counties from 1850 through 1900.
The society meets the first monday of each month at Blinn College Student Center (no meeting in June, July and August). Dues are $12/person or $18/couple. The society has grown to more than 200 members.
