A GLOSSARY OF HISTORICAL PLACE NAMES IN TURKEY

FROM THE 19th AND EARLY 20th CENTURY MALACOLOGICAL LITERATURE

A

 

Adalia (Forcart, 1940): Antalya.

Aidin (Sturany, 1902): Aydın.

Ajassoluk (Sturany, 1902): Ayasuluk, Ayasoluk or Ayasluk in Turkish, from the Greek agios theologos. Name of the hill in Selçuk where the medieval castle is located (Scherrer, 1995; Büyükkolanci, 1999); almost always used in connection with Ephesus.

Ala-Chehir (Sturany, 1902): Alaşehir.

Alayund (Sturany, 1902): Alayunt, town east of Kütahya.

Antigoni (Sturany, 1902): Burgazada off Istanbul in the Sea of Marmara.

Arnautkoi (Mousson, 1863): Arnavutköy; district of Istanbul along the Bosphorus.

Arsa (Boettger, 1883): Full citation in Boettger is "Arsa, valley near Xanthus, Lycia". This appears to refer to the ruins of Arsada, near the village of Arsaköy, above the Xanthus (Esen Çayı) valley (Bean, 1989).

Brussa: Bursa.

Budrun (Pfeiffer, 1949): Misspelling of Bodrum.

Bulghar Dagh (Sturany, 1905): Bulgar or Bolkar Mountain north of Mersin. The origin of the name of this mountain is open to interpretation (for example, see Demirci, 1938; Umar, 1993).

Burnabat (Sturany, 1902): Bornova, district of Izmir.

Chalki: Heybeliada off Istanbul in the Sea of Marmara; also Khalki.

 

D

 

Dolmabagtscké (Mousson, 1863): Dolmabahçe; district of Istanbul on the European side along the Bosphorus.

 

E

 

Eau-douce (Mousson, 1863): see Sweet Waters of Europe and Asia.

Eski Chehir (Sturany, 1902): Eskişehir.

 

H

 

Haidar-Pascha (Sturany, 1905): Haydar Paşa in Üsküdar, on the Asian side of Istanbul.

Horzoom (Westerlund, 1893): Horzum; present day Gölhisar, near the ruins of Cibyra, southwest Turkey (Bean, 1989). Note that Schütts (2001) identification of Horzum as “Horoz Tepe bei Marmaris” is wrong (for details, see Örstan & Yıldırım, 2003). Type location of Buliminus ponsonbyi (synonym of Jaminia loewii).

Keschisch Dagh (Sturany, 1902): Uludağ, Bursa.

Makri: Fethiye.

Olympos (Sturany, 1902): Uludağ, Bursa.

Ortakoi (Mousson, 1863): Ortaköy; district of Istanbul along the Bosphorus.

Oxia (Sturany, 1902): Sivriada off Istanbul in the Sea of Marmara.

Pera (Sturany, 1902): District of Istanbul.

Platia (Sturany, 1902): Yassıada off Istanbul in the Sea of Marmara. Type location of Trochoidea pyramidata platiensis.

Prince Islands (I'ile des Princes): The islands off Istanbul in the Sea of Marmara ("Adalar" in Turkish).

Prinkipo (Principo): Büyükada off Istanbul in the Sea of Marmara.

Saboundji-Bounar (Sturany, 1902): Sabuncupınar, town in Kütahya Province.

San Stefano (Sturany, 1902): Yeşilköy, district of Istanbul.

Scutari: Üsküdar, district of Istanbul on the Asian side.

Stanos (Forcart, 1940): Korkuteli, northwest of Antalya (Umar, 1993).

Süssen Wasser (Sturany, 1902): see Sweet Waters of Europe and Asia.

Sweet Waters of Europe and Asia: Historical resort areas in Istanbul ("Tatlısu" in Turkish). The Sweet Waters of Europe were the two streams that empty into the Haliç (Golden Horn), while the Sweet Waters of Asia were the two streams that empty into the Bosphorus near Kandilli, where Küçüksu Kasrı is located (Freely, 1998).

Tessli Dağ (Forcart, 1940): Unidentified mountain said to be near Fethiye.

 

Y

 

Yedi-Kouhéh (Sturany, 1902): Yedikule; Byzantine-Ottoman fort and the surrounding district in Istanbul.
