Metal Rear Fenders
Baja's
Main Menu
What Baja kit did I use? I here that question a lot. Well the truth of the mater is I did not use a kit at all. This little trick is one of my favorite. Look Mom no FIBERGLASS!!!

As you can see in the photo the rear metal fender looks just as good if not better than the fiber glass fenders found in most Baja Kits, and is hundreds of times stronger.

If you build your own Baja. You should end up with a few parts you do not know what to do with, like the front fenders. Most people do not know that the bolt holes on the front fenders are almost the same as the bolt holes for the rear fenders. So why not use the rear stock fenders? Well, the stock rear fender is not as wide as the front and will only cover a few inches of the rear tire. This would be fine for a full out race Baja but for a Street Baja or Weekend Warrior you will need a little more tire coverage.

You start by bolting the entire fender to the car and mark the areas that need to be cut off. A few sheets of heavy paper or light card board can be used to make a template so you can transfer the patern to the other fender. I have found that a Jig-Saw with a 24 to 32 tooth blade works great for cutting sheet metal, I here Saws-Alls work great too, but have never used one. When your done you should end up with somthing that looks like a rear fender. If you find a few bolt holes that are off, just redrill them.

The Blinker holes in the tops of the fenders can be filled in with a few sheets of fiberglass and bondo over the top to give a nice clean finish. A few coats of paint to mach the Baja and some fender welt will give you a nice clean finish. Do not forget to use some large fender washers for strength when you bolt the fenders on. File the edge smooth or place some ruber striping on it. In most cases you should not have clearance problems. But if your car has way more than stock suspension travel you will have to remove them when you do go Off-Road. I'm at this point now with my Baja. I like the look but will have to change to high mount aluminum fenders for the added travel on my Baja.
You can have this project done in less tha two hours. The metal fenders are just so much better than fiberglass. The fenders will not brake or crack like fiberglass and should give you meny years of service.
