Windshield Removal and Install
Main Menu
Here are some of the basic items you will need to install the windshield. The Windshield, Windshield Ruber, Warm Soapy Water, Screw Driver, Heavy Kite String, Gloves and Eye Protection of some sort.
Removing the Windshield out of a Baja is a simple task. You can have the windshield out in less than 5 minutes or even faster if you use a large hammer. The 3 reasons most people remove the windshield are leaking window rubers, painting the Baja and the #1 reason is broken or cracked glass.
If your window ruber is old, leaking and cracking you can use a razor or knife and slice the windshield out of the Baja. If the ruber is still good and you don't have any brakes or crakes in your windshield you can slowly push the window out of the car from the inside. The best way to do this is. Start at the top center of the window inside the Baja and peel back the window ruber. Spray your soapy water in between the ruber and the window frame. Do this all the way around the window. Next start peeling back the ruber on the upper section of the windshield.
Slowly push the upper section of the windshield out of the window frame. Once the top edge of the window cleares the window frame. The windshield will slide out of the window frame.
In the lower corners of the window frame, Make sure the little drain holes are not pluged up.
Check your old window ruber for damge. Cracks, Splits, Rips etc. will make it harder to reinstall and it might not seal.
Use more of the soapy water to fit the new window ruber on the new windshield. This some times takes a little work.
Take your kite string and fit it in the inside grove of the windshield. You should rap the string around the windshild 2 times. When you are done you should have the string start in the lower middle of the windshield. So when you pull on the string it will work it's way to the lower corners of the windshield.
Soap up the window frame then set the windshield back into the window frame. Next rap the loose end of the kite string around the screw driver and pull at 90 deagres to the window. This will set one corner of the window in the frame. Stop about halfway up the window frame. Do the same thing for the other corner of the windshield. Now slowly work the string across the top of the windshield. The windshield should have poped into place at this time.
Pull the ruber out of the window frame so that it lays flat on both the outside and inside of the Baja. If it curls under on the outside of the window. Water will get in and you will have leaks. If it curls in on the inside of the Baja the window is not set in corectly. This must be fixed or the windshield might come out on it's own.
Done!!! This will take you about 45 minutes to do. It's not hard and with Bajas you will more than likley replace your windshield every 2 or 3 years. Rocks will find you!!! Trust me on that.
