Atmel Corporation and FingerGear are introducing the Bio Computer-On-a-Stick USB Flash Drive now with fingerprint security. The Computer-On-a-Stick was announced in July 2005, with the promise of a more secure version, which is being released now.

The bootable USB flash drive contains the OS and all desktop software applications preinstalled and using as little as 200MB of flash memory. The device features Atmel's FingerChip sensor for one-swipe secure data access, and a large font LCD display.

Based on Linux 2.6.x Kernel with Gnome GUI Desktop, the device comes in configurations with 256MB, 512MB, and 1G.

The FingerGear Computer-On-a-Stick includes an Office Productivity Suite, along with the most commonly used home and office applications. The Office Suite, developed by OpenOffice.org, is compatible with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook counterpart applications.

The device also bundles the Mozilla FireFox web browser, as well as a PDF Creator, a zip compression utility, and GAIM, an Instant Messenger which communicates with Yahoo IM, MSN Messenger, AIM, and Napster, among others.

It features both public and private partitions. The public partition is accessible on any Windows, Linux, or Macintosh PC with a standard USB port, thus making it easy to share non-sensitive files. The encrypted private directory can only be accessed when booting from the device, by using a login password or fingerprint authentication.

The Bio Computer-On-a-Stick includes a USB 2.0 extension cable, a neck lanyard, and a mini boot CD. The device is bootable from any PC using an x86 processor support USB boot. The Computer-On-a-Stick pricing starts at US$99, and the Biometric Edition starts at US$149.
