Lucknow: Congress president and United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi will Sunday inaugurate the Indira Gandhi Hospital and Research Centre in her son Rahul Gandhi's constituency - Amethi.

Planned by Rahul Gandhi, the hospital is specially focused on blindness and funded by the Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust.

"Travelling through villages of eastern Uttar Pradesh, I was struck by the sufferings of blind people, both young and old," Rahul Gandhi said in a press release here Saturday.

Sonia Gandhi would be accompanied by daughter Priyanka and her husband Robert Vadra. Amethi has been the Gandhi family's constituency since former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi's time.

"I was surprised to find that almost 70 percent of the blindness is, in fact, curable. I am very excited about our plans...to make a real difference to blind people in the area," Rahul Gandhi added in the press release.

The 65-bed hospital spread across a floor area of about 12,000 sq. feet aims to handle at least 40,000 outdoor patients and 400 indoor patients in the first year.

Surgical experts in the hospital have been trained at the Aravind Eye Hospital in Madurai.
