Bill gives blind people priority.

WHOI News, Illinois.
Tuesday, May 02, 2006.

More than 70 percent of blind people in the country are unemployed.

However, a new state bill could put a dent in that number.

The bill would grant blind people first priority to operate vending facilities like soda and snack machines on state property.

"It gives them the satisfaction that they can really do something. It helps their self ego just like the rest of us if we can find a job," Mabel VanDusen of the Peoria Area Blind People's Center said.

The Senate needs to approve the bill before Gov. Rod Blagojevich can give his signature.
