How should I prepare for the class?
Yoga is best practiced with "an empty stomach and an open mind."  It's a good idea to refrain from eating heavy food two hours before class.  However, you don't have to starve yourself!  If you're hungry and it's close to class time, have something light, such as a piece of fruit.  To ensure you are well-hydrated, drink plenty of pure water both before and after class.

What should I wear in class?
Our practice room is heated, so you'll want to dress lightly and comfortably.  Leave your sweatsuits at home!  Women generally choose tank tops, sports bras, or teeshirts with shorts or tights.  Men wear swimsuits or shorts (teeshirts are optional).  And you won't need any fancy footwear - yoga is practiced in bare feet.

Also, please make sure you are NOT wearing any perfume, cologne, or scented body products when you come to class - some students are allergic to them.

What should I bring with me to class?
You don't need any special equipment for Bikram Yoga.  If you have your own yoga mat, bring it with you.  Since you'll be practicing in the heat, you'll need drinking water, a large (bath or beach-size) towel to cover your mat, and a small hand towel. Bring a second bath towel if you plan to shower at the studio.  For your convenience, you can also rent mats/towels and buy bottled water at the studio.

How long is the class?
Regular classes run approximately 95 minutes.  We do give special attention to beginning students, so occasionally classes run a few minutes longer.  It's good yoga practice to give yourself a few minutes before and after class to relax, so please schedule your next activity with this in mind.

Do I need to reserve in advance?
All our regular classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis, so reservations are not required.  However, you'll want to arrive about 30 minutes early* for your first class, so you can register, get familiar with the studio, and meet with your instructor for a brief orientation.

*First-timers who arrive less than 15 minutes before start time will be admitted at the instructor's discretion.

What do you actually do in a Bikram Yoga class?
Bikram Yoga is a style of Hatha (physical) yoga.  In Bikram's Beginning Yoga Class, our practice is always the same: 26 postures (asanas) and two breathing exercises (pranayamas) done in a specific sequence.  So while everything will be new at your first class, you'll quickly become familiar with the series as you continue practicing.

Bikram Yoga is best practiced in a heated room, with mirrors to check your form, and a Bikram certified instructor to ensure you are doing the postures safely and effectively.

I'm not very flexible - how can I do yoga?
This is probably the most common concern folks have when starting yoga, especially since yoga publications often show models in very advanced yoga postures.  Rest assured, you can be stiff as a board and still get tremendous benefit from practicing Bikram Yoga - and enjoy it, too!  Just do the best you can at each class, don't force any movement, and you'll see your flexibility increase over time.
