Dear Friends and Fellow Cyclists,
On Sept 1st, my brother John
Brazier, a Velo LaGrange Club rider, was involved in a very serious bicycle crash as he was struck by an oncoming vehicle
on Mandeville Canyon Road in Los Angeles. He sustained a life threatening laceration in his pelvic area, which resulted in
massive blood loss and several organs damaged. In addition, the crash resulted in a multitude of broken bones in his
pelvis, right leg and ankle, and left arm. The very good news is that there are no injuries to his head.
He was rushed to the UCLA Medical
trauma center where he spent the next 7-10 days fighting for his life while his wife, Stephanie, was by his side nearly every
moment. Some of the doctors consider his survival through that first week a near miracle and contribute it to his physical,
mental, and spiritual heath. After the first 9 days in the intensive care (ICU), he was able to breath on his own again. The
doctors were then able to remove the ventilator and reduce his morphine level. He is now very coherent and mentally sharp
as ever.
His attitude is incredibly positive with an amazing spirit and drive to keep fighting for life and the
best possible recovery. John is now to be considered a survivor and my personal inspiration. On Sept. 23, he began his first
of many reconstructive surgeries. At that time, the orthopedic team was able to install titanium plates and bolts to put his
pelvis back together. The doctors only looked confused when John asked prior to surgery if Colnago (the manufacturer of his
titanium bike) made body parts. His next surgery is scheduled for early October.
On October 1st, he
was moved out of the ICU to a regular hospital room. Eventually he will be moved to a rehabilitation facility prior to going
home, but it is too early to tell when that will be. Stephanie has been incredibly strong and tenacious since day 1 and is
doing better than anyone could imagine.
The length of John's recovery
is very unknown at this point. All things considered, it is expected to be very long. Throughout this recovery process, John
will likely be unable to return to his job. Stephanie is trying to work a few
days now and then, but as our families return to our respective homes, she will be working less and staying with John full
time.
Fortunately, John is insured.
However the driver of the vehicle was not. Unfortunately his coverage does not include all the medical costs. Despite receiving
some level of long term disability compensation, they will soon be enduring an enormous stress to pay their medical and home
bills. Many club members, friends, and members of the cycling community have asked Stephanie and/or I if there is anything
they can do. We would like to request that you support them through contributions to the John Brazier Fund, which will go
directly to helping them pay their bills. All contributions will be greatly appreciated and none will go unnoticed.
Thank you very much!
