Dr. Joan Dungey will come to your campus and share with you the steps of setting up a Kids Gardening Education Project for your school.  She will walk through the process, step-by-step, with you, including giving presentations to faculty, teaching your students, brainstorming ideas, sharing lesson plans and student activity guides, and implementing the final Project (e.g., planting) depending upon your needs and wishes.

Seminar days are customized to your school’s needs and programs.  Listed below are suggested activities for seminar packages but these can be changed by request according to your specific needs and school programs.

The following objectives would be covered in the 3-Day Seminar Package.  Some of them would also be covered in the one-day and two-day packages.

Seminar Objectives

Participants in the seminar packages will:

·       Participate in hands-on activities in order to increase understanding of and comfort with taking students outside for learning.

·       Consider enhancing the school property with a type of learning laboratory and explore the steps to do so.

·       Successfully do activities with inexpensive everyday items.

·       Plan to integrate outdoor activities with the regular classroom scope and sequence.

·       Brainstorm ways to involve your community members.

·       See examples of other schools’ outdoor areas.

·       Practice solving real problems, requiring the use of the scientific (problem solving) methods.

·       Realize that skills are best learned in a meaningful and relevant environment.

·       Evaluate the classroom program in the light of required state test outcomes and skill and plan outdoor or outdoor-related activities to teach them.

·       Discuss organizational skills for students to successfully work on-task outside.

·       Develop a list of personal objectives to accomplish in outdoor education.

·       Prepare a list fund-raising possibilities.

·       Examine a variety of resources.

Descriptions of Seminar Packages

 Deluxe 3-day package

Joan will come to your school at three different times.  At the first contact, she will assist you with the initial planning.  A follow-up consulting day would fine-tune plans, answer questions, and address problems, while the third day would be the actual implementation of the project. Between visits, Joan would be available by phone or e-mail for on-going consultation.  You will gain the most benefit from on-going consultation and assistance.

2-Day Package

Depending upon your needs, two days may be sufficient. You may already have an outdoor project started and only need more advice and help.  Perhaps you will need help in the actual implementation.  You may select any two days’ schedules from the Deluxe 3-Day Package, or customize the 2-Day Package to your needs.

1-Day Package

Although this is not recommended because of the benefit of follow-up meetings and consulting, some schools may just need some additional help or an extra boost to continue their project.  Any one of the three days of the Deluxe 3-Day Package may be selected or you may customize the 1-Day Package to your needs.

1/2-Day Seminar

Within a 100-mile radius of Dayton, Ohio, Joan will come for a ½ day seminar, either for a private consultation with your Project Director, or for faculty in-service.

These days could count as professional development days and CEO’s should be awarded for them.  Ideally, the Project Director and team members would be able to be excused from classes for site visits for planning.   If not, Joan can still assist you in teaching your classes and talk with you between classes, at lunch, and during any planning time you have.

Notes:

1. If you are further than 300 miles from Dayton, please call for prices.

2. Faculty in-services are limited to one school per contract.

3. Grant-writing fees are separate.

4. Call for prices.  Payment can be in the form of check or school purchase order, received at least two weeks before the first site visit.
