SPRING/SUMMER, 2013 CLASSES

LIANGONG (a type of qigong) is a great way to increase body awareness, range of motion and energy while gently improving fitness and overall health. Many have found relief from pain, stiffness and other ailments. It also works well as a warm-up and cool-down for activities like work around the house, gardening, hiking and sports.

Liangong combines China's ancient therapeutic movement therapies (qigong) with current medical theory from the east and west. It involves 20-35 minutes of breathing, stretching, and spreading of the limbs in slow dynamic movements, like a simple form of yoga. Liangong is easier to learn than Taiji and provides health benefits sooner. People of all ages and physical ability can benefit from the increased circulation, range of motion, and energy these exercises provide.

TAIJI (Tai Chi) movements are complex, involving differing changes in direction and acceleration among the limbs and torso while maintaining alignment and relaxation. Practitioners marvel at the physical and metaphorical lessons to be learned at the beginning through advanced levels. An advanced form of qigong, the health benefits it was designed to provide become evident and its martial essence revealed when practiced correctly. Practicing a simpler form of qigong (like Liangong) or other movement forms like yoga, dance or martial arts before learning Taiji is recommended.

These classes focus on the Wu family style (one of five traditional Taijiquan styles), developing a strong Taiji foundation and expressing qigong/Taiji principles.

Master Su Zifang Seminar reviews - This class meets every month on the third Saturday from 10 am to 1 pm. Each hour is devoted to reviewing one of the subjects Master Su taught in her previous visit to Olympia (Principles of Movement, Taiji [principles and sword], Bagua). Everyone is welcome to attend, attendance at the seminar is not required. Contact me for details. For more information on Master Su's seminar, click on Master Su Zifang Seminars above.

Guo Ling Qigong - This qigong is practiced to improve the body's natural immune system. It was created by Guo Ling, a woman who battled uterine cancer. A master of the Wu Qinxi (Five Animal Play) qigong, she turned to qigong after Eastern and Western therapies had no effect on the cancer which had spread through her body. Her life was prolonged for more than 20 years. Qigong is the component of traditional Chinese medicine that uses the mind, physical alignment, and movement to bring qi (vital life energy) into balance. A quiet, walking exercise, Guo Ling Qigong combines motion with stillness and meditation. Guo Ling Qigong is currently offered in private or small-group lessons only.

Northern Shaolin Kung Fu - Traditional Shaolin is characterized by overall speed and quickness, varied footwork, precision, and creative applications of techniques. It is a whirlwind of circular, straight, short, and long attacks that flow and escalate from one to the next. Basic training requires building a strong foundation of stances, handwork, and footwork. It progresses to include weapons and animal forms. Some martial art experience required. Northern Shaolin Kung Fu is currently offered in private or small-group lessons only.
