Individuality
by Maricarda

We are all different. We were all raised different, we all have different personal history, we all think different. What hurts me may not hurt you.

What I think is right, you may think as wrong. Instead of accepting these differences and honoring individuality, what do we do? We try to control everything, overpower others, force situations to go "our way," ridicule, criticize and judge those who have unique ideas, look different, talk different, dress different, have different body shape, choose alternative or traditional lifestyles and religions. Anything that threatens the norm, is not understood or is not familiar is wished to be stifled, controlled and conformed.

Yet, many of our innovators fit in the category of weird, crazy, ugly, or evil. What would have happened to Einstein if he would have taken the people's judgments personally? What would have happened to Thomas Edison if he would have given in to people who told him that creating a light bulb was impossible? Or to Mozart, when the public scorned at his eccentric piano compositions by yelling "You can't do that!"

Jesus is the best example of individualism that I can speak of. The Pharisees warned him to conform, yet he stood his ground. He remained true to himself and to his Father in heaven. People wanted him to give up. They accused him of blasphemy, they told him he was wrong and that they were right, but Jesus knew that he had acquired a wisdom that people would not understand and he accepted that with love. He respected peoplešs individualities and peoplešs opposing views. He followed his own path without being influenced by what the majority thought and wanted him to be and do. He gave us the best example of what individual choice really means and is.

Even if it takes you to the death, follow and choose what you know in your soul to be good for you and humanity, instead of what others and the majority think is best for you.

With love to all,
Maricarda
