White Potatoes

White potatoes sound soothing to me, perhaps because of digging for them in the ground to harvest. The first time I had a fresh potato, rather than store bought, I was entranced.

Helping a friend harvest potatoes in her garden one time, it felt like magic to rummage in the cool dirt, retrieving this edible booty. Quite an experience for a city girl. I like that potatoes grow in the dirt rather than above ground.

Potatoes growing in their dirt bed reminds me of the earth rhythm of life, how I long to have the kind of lifestyle that allows me to keep my own rhythm from one hour to the next, one day to the next. This, as opposed to a prescribed routine fashioned out of convention and habit. To rise in the morning when I wish, to move through my day without rushing, to sleep when I feel the need. To eliminate clocks and other mechanical timepieces, following instead my natural nudgings for food, work, contemplation, loving and rest. This is the kind of life I want. Honoring my body, growing and transforming each day as the potato does in the dirt, in the heart of the earth.

Perhaps I can somehow practice having "white potato days."
