There are several types of Cockatiel's, from the Grey Normal to the colorful Pied and Pearl to the
silky Lutino with many other exciting and beautiful colorations in between, or in combination. Mutations help give
each Cockatiel its' own markings and color scheme over the generations and at the attached link you can see a representation
of each basic type.
Color intensity tends to vary by sex. Males tend to have brighter (sharper) facial coloring while
the females tend to have more color variations on their bodies, particularily notable in the Pearl coloration. Prior
to the 1st molt (at about 6-8 months), babies can be extremely difficult to sex, with the males beginning to exhibit
hormonal changes around the time of 1st molt, sexing can become easier for most. Pearl males tend to lose their chest
pearling by the 2nd molt and can be identified by their smooth light grey chest with some back pearling whereas the females
tend to retain all their Pearling. Lutino's are extremely difficult to sex at any time and unless the male shows
some typical male behavior, confusing the sexes is common.
