Sudlow

Agnes May Sudlow was my maternal grandmother. She married Frederick William Gejer. I was given her middle name, although mine is spelled "Mae." She prided herself in being the "family museum." She saved all kinds of interesting pieces of paper that have been of great help in tracking down family information. My aunt, who had been living in my grandparents' house since Grandma died in 1984, died in March of 2001. My mother and I were recently in New York to sell the house and make arrangements to close her estate. It was amazing the things that we found of photographic and genealogical interest. It will take me months to sort through all of it. When I am able, I will add some photographs to this site.

I know Grandma would be tickled if she could see all that I've dug up on her heritage already. I think of her often as I work on this family line.

Most American-born Sudlows are the descendants of Richard Sudlow who came here from England in 1766 prior to the Revolutionary War. This family tree had been extensively researched by Paul Sudlow of Danville, Illinois, and there are many cousins continuing his work today. Like many others, Agnes (my grandmother) was in receipt of Paul's yearly Christmas letters and photographs which I have had the privilege of inheriting.

Kelly Smith has been constructing a web site for one of the lines in this family group.  This site has been growing and has quite a bit of information to date.  Included are Paul Sudlow's letters and photographs, a must-see. And Debra Jean Sudlow Miller and Susan Isaac also have web sites posting information on their branches of this same family. Debra's sister Lynda Sudlow quite accidentally found an old Sudlow photo album in Ohio at the Logan Antique Mall. Some of the photographs have been identified; many are not. Help with identification of these beautiful photos would be much appreciated.

Other points of Sudlow interest:

• A number of Sudlow descendants have been collecting pieces of Sudlow pottery (myself included) from antique stores and eBay. Robert Sudlow was born on 13 May 1844 in Welshampton, Shropshire, the son of Thomas and Mary. He died on 4 December 1916 in Alsager, Cheshire. He went into partnership with Samuel Gibson and formed the pottery company Gibson, Sudlow & Co. in approximately 1874. In 1884 he formed his own company called Sudlow and Son. They first traded at Adelaide Street, Burslem, and later moved to Moorland Road, Burslem. His grandsons continued the business until 1965 when Sudlow and Sons was taken over by Howard Potteries, Ltd., now closed. In 1961 the 4th generation R.C.B. Sudlow was Works Manager. • There was also the Sudlow Potato Chip Co. located in Muncie, Indiana. The owner/president was Donald H. Sudlow (his wife was Marcella). He was the son of Ray and Ada Morehead Sudlow and grandson of George and Ella Ingmire Sudlow. He sold the company to a larger food company and then worked for them in Kalamazoo, Michigan. When, I'm not sure, but the 1961, '62, '63, '64, '65 and '66 city directories list: Sudlow Food's Inc., Manufacturers and Distributors of Fine Potato Chips, Popcorn and Nut Meats, 2600 S. Madison. They are not listed in 1967 and then listed again in 1968-69 with a new manager's name. Today the Sudlow tins can be found occasionally in antique stores and on eBay. • There was a Sudlow and Siney stage coach company in New York City. I found it in both the New York City and the Brooklyn city directories for 1861. John Sudlow (listed below) was the proprietor of this company. If anyone has any further information, please contact me. I've looked for advertisements, but I have found none to date.

• I have recently found a Samuel Sudlow who served in the Revolutionary War in the 1st New York regiment under Col. G. Van Schaick starting in March of 1777. I am awaiting information from the DAR to see if they have any records on him. There was also a Watson "Watts" Sudlow who served as a Private in Captain Andrew McMyers' Company, First New Jersey Regiment (later became Captain John V. Angel's Company), commanded by Mattias Ogden, Esq.

New York Sudlows

I have not been able to connect my Sudlow branch to the above-mentioned family tree. Most of the folks I've met in that family have been very kind and have welcomed me as if I were a confirmed cousin already. I would be PROUD to find that we are related, guys!! Until then, I remain (as we jokingly say) your "potential" cousin.

My Sudlow branch comes out of New York. I suspect from naming patterns within the family that Samuel's middle name was Henry. One census record states that his father was of foreign birth and another states that he was born in Ireland. His mother was named Elizabeth and was also born in Ireland. Beyond that, our family stops at Samuel for the moment.
