Congratulations to Tom Pease and his Vocal Ensemble: The Taft High School Vocal Ensemble won two first place awards at the Disneyland "Music in the Parks" music festival on Friday, May 19. The ensemble took a first place trophy for best mixed choir and a first place trophy for best overall choral group. Vocal Ensemble earned a superior rating (the highest possible rating) from the judges. The group will be performing at the Spring Concert on June 7th along with the choir, jazz band, concert band, and orchestra. [19May2006]
The Taft High School Music Department proudly presents the world premier of Camp Wannamaker, an original musical written by Taft faculty member Tom Pease. It is directed by Taft faculty member Angela Barrett. Live music by Taft band and orchestra students. When two teenage boys find themselves working at an all girl summer arts camp, they expect they've got it made. What they get, however, is something they never could have anticipated. Join Jonathan, Michael, and the girls of Camp Wannamaker in this funny yet telling story of love, life and learning. Performances will be Thursday April 27th at 3:30, Friday April 28th at 3:30 and 7pm, and Saturday April 29th at 7pm. Tickets are $5.00 for students and $10.00 for adults and can be purchased at the door. [24Apr2006]
If you know someone who was in Taft Band in Fall 1964 through Summer 1995 (32 years!), they will know Mr. Ken Kamp. Mr. Burch recently received a letter from Lynn Tivens, class of 1969 (trombone) about Mr. Kamp -- click here to read it. [03Apr2006]
Note: Mr. Kamp passwd away on October 10, 2006
This Saturday, March 25th Taft Orchestra and Band will be attending the SCSBOA Festival at Pacifica HS, 600 East Gonzales Road, Oxnard 93036. We need 1 more Orchestra parent and 2 Band parents to drive and carry instruments to the festival. Please contact Mr. Burch or Lorraine Clark if you can help.
Transportation funds. The cost for the bus for this trip is not covered by the school. It comes out of our booster club account. Since that account has less than $100 of non-encumbered funds (because of lack of fund-raising success) we need to ask each participant to bring $5.00 to help cover the cost of transportation. Please bring cash or check (made out to Taft Music) by this Friday, March 24. This applies even for those who are driving themselves to the event. We all need to do our share to make these events happen. [21Mar2006]
Arts in Education Aid Council, Inc., presents: The Sixth Annual Valley Wide Student Art Show and Family Arts Festival Sunday, March 19th - Noon until 4:00 pm The Valley Wide Student Art Show and Family Arts Festival will feature over 600 young artists, musicians and performance artists from over 40 San Fernando Valley public schools. The Madrid Theatre will showcase various school orchestras, choirs and other performance groups including Another Man's Trash, Isaac Tetenbaum, Taft High School, the San Fernando Valley Youth Chorus, the Pacoima Middle School Choir, Golden Performing Arts, Pearl Fernando, the Sherman Oaks Center of Enriched Studies Jazz Combo, and Arts in Education Aid Council's orchestras from its three adopted schools: Vanalden Elementary, Melvin Elementary, and Maurice Sendak School. The Art Show will be held simultaneously in the Madrid Theatre lobbies and at the Canoga Park Youth Arts Center located ½ block from the Madrid Theatre. For more information visit www.aieac.org. We are not going to San Francisco after all, because we don't have enough money for the bus. Sorry. [Mar2006]
ATTENTION TAFT ORCHESTRA AND BAND STUDENTS - SAN FRANCISCO TRIP INFORMATION - We had enough orchestra students sign up and make a deposit, but only a few band students, so the orchestra (period 6) will be going on the trip. Band students (wind players) who made a deposit will also be allowed to come along as participants. It may be that wind parts, for those who previously signed up, can reasonably created from the string orchestra music we will play. Color guard students who have already made a deposit will also be able to come on the trip as equipment people. [26Jan2006]
Every year Taft HS band and orchestra students have the opportunity to participate in the Heritage Music Festival, a weekend of music and fun. This year the event we will attend is in the San Francisco area, the weekend before Spring Break (leave Thursday April 6th after school, return Sunday April 9th). Before we can commit to participating, we need to know who plans to go. We need enough capable students on the right blend of instruments to make a viable music performance. The total cost of the trip will be about $350 per student ($150 due January 27th, $150 due February 24th). In order to participate, you must be academically eligible and have no outstanding band or school-related debt. A $50 deposit is due by the last Friday of school before Winter Break, December 16, 2005. Monday, December 19th, Mr. Burch will make the decision whether or not we can participate. [18Oct2005]
