"Creation flavored" thoughts on the lectionary texts
Date: October 4, 2009 (a full moon Sunday!)
Text: Psalm 25
Thoughts
Teach me your paths - what do you picture - a path through the woods, through the fields, through the sea, through the
crowd, along the beach? I usually picture the woods.
The sins/transgressions of my youth - of our youth as a species. How do you suppose we will think/act/live differently
as we reach maturity as a species? Humility (vs9) is the adequate and appropriate (mature?) posture towards Creation.
Where does that play out in your life?
Waiting (vs5) - what are you waiting for? What is God waiting for? How is your waiting different from God's
waiting?
Text: Job 2.1-10
Thoughts
Satan going to and fro, up and down upon the earth. What else did Satan see and experience besides just Job?
What did those things lead Satan to think about?
Does physical suffering lead to change of behavior or belief? Does another's suffering (for example, as a result
of sea level rising) lead us to change our behavior?
We receive good and evil - we live both as predator and prey. Life is not all soft and cozy.
Text: Hebrews 1.1-4, 2.5-12
Thoughts
"the Son is heir of all things; is the one through whom God created the world" - Is this enough to
give us a reason to care for Creation?
Nice quote of Ps 8 - "everything in subjection to the Son" - i.e., everything is appropriately a faith issue.
And does "everything really mean everything" - physically, spiritually, morally? So rocks and trees and streams, or
just actions and beliefs and persons?
"for whom all things exist" - Creation exists to sing God's praise, not just for our use!
Prayer
Dear God,
we walk to and fro, up and down on the earth
and its laughter and loveliness move us to humility.
It all sings your praise.
Forgive us the sins of our youth and ignorance and pride and carelessness;
draw us onto your paths of righteousness and gentleness
that we might walk in harmony through the life of the world.
