ABOUT ME

Hi All;

My name is Paul Smith and I live in the beautiful state of West Virgina. In the little community of Wills Creek, near Elkview, which lies approximately 15 miles north of Charleston. I am 40 years old. I have been married to the most wonderful woman for the past 18y ears. We have been blessed two children. Danielle is 17 and Richard is 13. I have small desktop publishing company that work at from my home. I am a T-6 paraplegic due to a motorcycle accident in 1991.

After leaving the hospital I began lifting weights and pushing myself up and down the hills of US 119. Most days I'd push 10 miles or so and farther on the weekends. I felt great. I thought about entering the sport of wheelchair racing, but I wasn't thrilled over it and in no way could I afford a racing chair. Life went on and rehab started me back to school and my exercising died out. Then one day I look down and BOY WAS I FAT! And miserable. I came across the upright handcycles on the Internet and was interested. AND THEN....... I found the sport of handcycling and the recumbent handcycles and I was hooked. I just knew that was what I wanted and needed. But the price blew me away. Around $3,000.00!

I knew that our tight little budget would not allow me to afford that. But, I just couldn't let it go. So in March of 2000 I decided to start a handcycle fund and get the money for me a bike. It took almost a year and thanks to GOD, Challenged Athletes Foundation, Outdoor Extremes, IPlayOutside.com, Delta Communications and a lot of caring people I ordered my bike March of 2001.
