This PMU broodmare sacrificed her freedom, her offspring year after year so women could alleviate symptoms of menopause. Her reward was a death sentence. Thanks to our donors, Tango and her unborn foal were spared Feb 28, 2007. Help us give these PMU horses a life of joy laced with human gratitude.

There are several ways to support the work of the Rescue:

SPONSORSHIPS                                                                      Sponsorships are monthly contributions to the support of a particular horse. The funds pay for feed first, then healthcare and other needs of the individual horse.

An individual or business may sponsor a horse for any amount and be invoiced monthly. Currrently, two of our horses are unsponsored: Sunshine and Sierra, 2 PMU mares rescued 4.5 years ago from auction.  Tango and Tawni are partially sponsored.

GENERAL DONATIONS
Many people prefer to give once or twice a year when it is convenient financially. These general donations are used where they are needed most unless they are designated for a particular purpose.

IN KIND SERVICES
These services are provided by equine professionals or businesses free of charge.

DONATIONS OF FEED OR SUPPLIES
We are always grateful for such donations, especially of high quality feed. If you are interested in donating tack, supplies, etc, please contact us.

CONTRIBUTIONS TO SPECIAL FUNDS
We have found people turn to non profit rescues when they are in trouble. Their horses are in need and they became fearful they might have to give up their companion or euthanize him as a last resort. Spirit of Equus Rescue will serve as a fund organizer in such circumstances and a special fund will be created on behalf of the horse in need. Usually health issues have caused the crisis and owners are overwhelmed financially. They need support for a period of time, usually less than a year until the horse recovers.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION
Sponsorship funds are used to feed our horses. If there is additional money after feed costs, the funds are used for health care, including psyllium treatments, deworming, supplements, antibiotics, pain medications, and other first aid and emergency supplies.

Fly masks are essential and during the summer our horses wear them 24 hours a day, They wear out quickly with such use, and they cost $25.

Sponsorships provide funds for hoofcare, chiropractic care, dental care, and vet visits.

Here is a list of current costs per horse for necessities:
  • Feed:  alfalfa is $14 a bale; orchard grass is $18 a bale. Each horse eats 1.5% of their body weight in hay per day. So 1000 lb horse eats 15 lbs of hay/day or 420 lbs per month. Hay averages out to about $90 per horse per month.
  • Hoof trim: $40 per horse every two months
  • Dewormer: $5-15 per horse every 3 months
  • Fly masks with nose and ear guards, $25 each
