Welcome to the room 301 website!

And, welcome to the 2012-2013 school year.  Please explore the information and resources on the pages of our classroom website.  Feel free to send me feedback on sites that you find useful and that your kids enjoy!  (And let me know if a link is not working).  Also, please feel free to let me know if there is anything I could add to the site to make it more useful for you.

This year we will continue to expand on the reading, writing, and math skills worked on last year in third grade.  The "Walk to Read" format will be used within the classroom this year along with Ms. Beeksma.  Small groups will be challenged at their own reading level.  They will also be challenged to complete independent reading tasks.  Some kids will participate in Literature Circles which will allow them to self-monitor and self-pace their learning.  They will also be challenged to complete web-based projects and keep journals.  This will allow us to better challenge students at all reading levels.

In writing, we will work from the ground up in generatng ideas for writing that the kids know about and care about.  Kids will write about topics that interest them, while expanding on those topics using elaboration and voice.

In math, we will continue with the MCP program used in third grade last year.  We will expand on skills learned in third grade.  We will be concentrating on "power standards."  These are the standards that we will look for every single fourth grader to meet by the end of the year.  These include mastery of multiplicaton tables, area / perimeter, basic knowledge of fractions, decimals, data and probability, problem solving strategies, and estimation.

Homework will also continue building on skills from last year.  We will typically have spelling, vocabulary, comprehension, and math homework throughout the week.  I like to suggest that your child have a regular time and space to complete homework.  The assignments are designed for students to be able to complete on their own with minimal assistance.  Try to limit the time spent on homework to no more than 40 minutes each night.  As long as they have tried their best for 40 minutes, students will get credit for completing the nightly assignment.

I appreciate eveyone's help at home!

Thanks again.

Steve Goliff
