The fiery tenor playing of Ellery Eskelin always deserves the attention of
jazz fans and with his intriguing trio playing support it becomes required
listening. Eskelin's Kulak 29 & 30 (Hat Art) features the polyrhythmic
talents of Jim Black, who lends strong a sense of swing even when making
rhythmic leaps, and the singular talents of accordionist/sampler Andrea
Parkins, who contributes color ranging from static backgrounds of sound
to Albert Ayler-inspired accordion explorations. Eskelin is self assured
enough to let his cohorts take the lead, yet is undoubtedly in complete
control when he puts the horn to his lips, working his tenor with a master's
touch - "Rhyme or Reason" is indisputable proof of this.
