Purse # 10 Cashmere & Cut Steels

This body of this elegant purse is blue-green Kashmir (or cashmere) fabric, beaded along the design with silver cut steel beads on one side of the purse. The handle is of the same fabric. Cashmere is a mixture of silk, fine wool and cotton fibers. There is no lining.
On page 174 Restoring & Collecting Antique Beaded Purses Evelyn describes this fabric this way:

"True kashmir comes from Kashmir Valley in India ... and is one of the most valuable fabrics in the world, being both lightweight and soft.... Dominant parts of the pattern were outlined with French cut steel beads as early as 1820, when English travellers making the Grand Tour visited what was to become their colony."
