Thank you for your time, D.R. "Doc" Young - Retired Fire Fighter and currently
employed as a Fire and Safety Officer
Young,William I joined the Aviation Crash Crew in 1959, Cherry Point, NC. After 3 years
of duty section and driving and operating heavy equipment,
I went to Iwakuni
January 1962-1963, helped set up the first crash crew at Udorn, Thailand,
back to Iwakuni where I began instructing crash, fire, rescue.
On returning
to Cherry Point in 1963, I became an instructor in the crew there. We had a
school separate from the operating crews and upgraded everyone coming from
Memphis before they went on to station and wing operating crews. After
becoming NCOIC of the school, (during which time the Corps began building up
because of Nam) we began upgrading the civilian structural firemen there
too, along with some officers and enlisted coming into the mos from other
means.
Went to Viet Nam in 1968-1969, NCOIC of the DaNang crew. Made MSgt
there, then promoted to 1/Lt on the Combat Leadership program.
Back to
Cherry Point, OIC of the crew there until 1972. Because of our intense
training program at Cherry Point, (thanks to many previous crash crew
professionals who "cared" about their assignments and people they worked
with), Cherry Point Crash, Fire and Rescue School became a legitimate USMC
recognized school and the USN Training system came there to make movies of
our training to be used in all Navy-USMC CF&R Schools. During this period,
when "temporary" officers were reverting back to their permanent ranks, I
was recommended for and promoted to CWO-2 permanantly.
Off to Iwakuni
1972-1973, OIC of the crew there, while making Crash Crew Inspections for
the 1st Wing CG at "Rose Garden" and Futema, Okinawa.
Upon returning to 2nd
Wing in 1973, I spent my last year at Bogue Field which was operating
heavily at the time. There I retired after 22 years in the Corps.
Wouldn't
trade it for anything I could possibly have done otherwise(isn't hindsight
wonderful). I presently serve as Secretary of the AFFR (Aviation
Firefighting Rescue Association), members who are active, retired, or served
some period in the Crash Crews, officer and enlisted. Spouses of former
crash crewmen whom we've lost are regarded as "honorary members" who are
welcome to our newslettersand reunions which are normally held at various
places every 2 years (October 2001 should be at Cherry Point area), a great
lot of fun "get together". Our membership is over 100 strong as of the
first year, and growing. It started in Beaufort, SC but many members are
from as far as Hawaii, Calif., etc. Any legitimate crash crew personnel,
active or "out" wanting to join our association can contact me on line or
at: William C. Young, 5115 Chalk Street, Morehead City, NC 28557. Well
Ike, did you get all you asked for??? You have a great thing going and I
wish you the best and continued success. Semper Fi, "Bill" Young
