Details

Step back in time when you vacation in this beautifully restored 17th century stone farmhouse which basks in the south of France beneath the pure, sweet light of Provence.  La Jauberte, the farm's Provencal name, is balanced on the rim of a mountain between earth and sly as though unwilling to relinquish either. The views on the countryside are sweeping and superb, from the Montagne de lure, to the Luberon, and to the nearby medieval village of Viens.  Below, in a historic and protected valley which has slept relatively undisturbed for centuries, relics of the Roman Empire lie waiting to be explored.  Days passed in such a region are serene, sauvage, romantic, and not easily forgotten.

In the house ample space is provided for 8 persons in 4 charming bedrooms, with 2 full baths  Rooms are furnished with antiques, except for the beds which are modern and comfortable.  There is a delightful kitchen complete with clotheswasher and dishwasher, a separate dining room, a living room with period fireplace, and 2 terraces. Stone floors and staircases worn smooth by the passage of time are deliciously cool beneath bare feet.  Guests feel comfortable regardless of the season since the house is completely insulated and modern beneath its ancient attire.  The swimming pool is discretely tucked away on one side of the farmhouse and overlooks the valley; tennis is available in the village. A permanent caretaker lives on the grounds and maintains the 18 acres of fields and woods.

For those restless souls who must explore their surroundings, the nearest village and market is a mere 15 minute drive from the farm; and the largest town in the valley where one may find all necessary conveniences is only 10 miles away.  An 1.25 hour drive will put you in the beautiful city of Aix-en-Provence, appropriately called the Paris of Provence, and Avignon is only an hour away.

Other than that there is little or nothing to do.  Well, you can visit the Marquis de Sade's ruined castle, or the home of Victor Hugo, or Albert Camus's modest grave, or you might hike through the couuntryside described so vividly in the novels of the great French writer Jean Giono.  And there are the vineyards, wonderful cheeses, wines, of course, olives, yes, especially with garlic, wild mushrooms in early-morning glades, truffles under foot. Or you could wander aimlessly through the scores or more of perched villages, each one more entrancing than the last, that are scattered throughout this extraordinary valley.  Oh, yes.  The food!

Comments above provided by the owner of La Jauberte!

Note:  Viens is less than 3 hours from Nice, 1 1/2 hours from Marseilles, and a bit more than an hour from Aix.  The little village lies 70 kilometers due east of Avignon, a few kilometers north of the National 100 between Apt and Manosque.  Excellent directions available.
