Details Set in a high meadow in the heart of the Peridord Noir, Gaurenne is a charming farmhouse dating from the early 18th century. The property is within 15 to 20 minutes of the most famous sites in the Dordogne, and yet it offer a privacy and tranquility which make sight-seeing a choice but not a necessity. In this beautiful setting with its view of neighboring hills and hamlets, it is possible for a visitor to remain undisturbed, walking through the property's 18 acres of meadow and woods, following footpaths through the valley and nearby villages. Next to the house are both fruit and walnut orchards, and the covered stone terrace catches summer breezes and provides a gracious place for outdoor dining and relaxing. There is also a swimming pool which functions in summer months. The house is built of the golden limestone which is typical of the region and has a steeply pitched "lauze" roof made of stone slabs. These highly prized roofs are found within a limited 20 mile radius in this part of the Dordogne. The house is one of 3 buildings arranged around a courtyard in the traditional manner of French farms. It has been restored in a way which respects its original rustic character while adding modern plumbing fixtures, etc. for comfort. The interior has many walls of exposed stone, beamed ceilings throughout, and floors of the honey colored local stone (downstairs) and of local chestnut (upstairs). Furnishings include antiques and French fabrics. The main floor is comprised of a kitchen, living room, and a half-bath. The kitchen is of generous size and has the usual amenities including a dishwasher as well as a table and chairs. There is a lovely stone window which looks out onto the meadow. The living room is large and includes a dining area with an antique farm table as well as a comfortable sitting area. The upstairs includes a bathroom and 2 bedrooms with large windows and antique armoires. The master bedroom also contains a sink. The bathroom has a tub/shower, a bidet, and sink set into a tile counter. The WC is separate. The house is equipped with central heating and a washing machine. The part of the Dordonge know as the Perigord Noir offers a lush landscape threaded with meandering rivers and dotted with medieval villages. Dense forests alternate with rolling meadows and fields. There are extensive hiking trails (a map available at the visitors center in Sarlat), canoe trips on the Dordogne or Vezere rivers, horseback riding, swimming, and tennis, all nearby. There are also numerous chateaux to visit (Beynac and Castelnaud are not to be missed) as well as odd sites like the ruined Chateau de Commarque (a wonderful walk) and the Cabanes de Breuil (an unusual cluster of rounded stone dwellings of unknown origin). The region is, of course, best known for its wealth of prehistoric sites. The Lascaux caves are a 30 minute drive away, Font-de-Gaume is 25 minutes away as is the National Museum of Pre-history at Les Eyzies-de-Tayac, and the Abri de Cap Blanc with its carved horses is a 5 minute drive. Local outdoor markets provide regional produce and products, with that of Sarlat being one of the most colorful in France. A listing of suggested outings, restaurants, and market days is provided to help visitors make full use of their stay.
