Details

Situated just outside the medieval village of Casseneuil (1 km), on the borders between Gascony and the Dordogne, the house lies on the peaceful banks of the River Lot in ten acres of old apple trees and garden and provides an ideal base in which to relax and to explore this glorious part of France.

La Nougarède is a large, rambling farmhouse built of traditional stone and ancient Toulouse brick, which is typical of the architecture in this region. Parts of it certainly date from the 16th century and over the years it has been added to and restored to create a harmonious mixture of old and new.

The main house has a large, light and airy south facing summer room leading into a covered terrace filled with bougainvillaea and other plants, which has a dining table seating twelve. This in turn opens out onto the outside terrace, swimming pool and garden with views of the river. The sitting room has a large stone fireplace and is furnished with country furniture and books, and is wonderfully cool in summer. The kitchen is fully equipped with a large fridge/freezer, dishwasher, oven and hob. There is a laundry room in the small barn with a washing machine and dryer.

There are two double bedrooms on the ground floor, each with their own bathrooms and entrances. Upstairs there is a master bedroom and bathroom with a free-standing bath and views over the courtyard on one side and a small balcony overlooking the pool and garden on the other side. There is also a small twin bedroom and bathroom.  Available 2 week periods July 8 - Sept. 2 for both house and cottage; Sat. to Sat.

The guest cottage forms part of the courtyard and is on one level. It has two spacious and comfortable bedrooms, one double and one twin, both with bathrooms. There is a small sitting room and a fully equipped fitted kitchen including dishwasher and washing machine for those who wish to make something without disturbing anyone.  Available 2 week periods April-Oct.

Outside there are shaded terraces under the arches, a swimming pool (11m x 5m) with roman steps which can be lit at night, garden furniture, a small jetty where you can fish, a rowboat and outboard motor, a barn with parking for two cars and outside lighting.

Note:

  • The COTTAGE is available all weeks except July and August.
  • The HOUSE and the COTTAGE together are available only during July and August.
  • The HOUSE is never available on its own

The ancient kingdom of Aquitaine is here to discover. To the west you will find the great vineyards of Bordeaux or the sandy beaches along the Landes. To the east is the old city of Cahors with its vineyards along the river. Or south to the lively city of Toulouse and on through the heart of Gascony to the foothills of the Pyrénees and the Basque country.

It is a region rich in history and there are many bastides, medieval fortified hilltop towns and villages, which have changed little and are still living communities that burst into life on market days with stalls filled with fresh local produce. Then there are the fortress châteaux of Biron, Castelnaud and others, notably Bonaguil, which often has open air concerts, or the graceful Renaissance château of les Milandes, once the home of the dancer Josephine Baker and her family of children. They are the legacy of wars and feudal disputes over the centuries, which ended with the marriage of Eleanor of Aquitaine to Henry Plantaganet at whose court the music and poetry of the troubadours flourished.
