| Archaeology
is an important tool for biblical studies. In this unit, you will
become more familiar with biblical archaeology and at least three
artifacts that relate to the Bible. Working through the group
project will help you deepen your understanding and appreciation of the
many disciplines which are part of this science. The group
presentation consists of two basic elements: first, there is the
portfolio, which presents your group's research. Secondly, there
is the recreation of an actual artifact which relates to the Bible. |
The Portfolio: 4% of your Bib Lit grade Portfolio Requirement: Any portfolio styled binder in which your portfolio material can be neatly presented. (See some of the samples I have in class) It should be clean, neat, appealing and contain each of the following in this order: 1) A 2 page (minimum) research paper on the Archaeology of the New Testament. (This is just a general overview of New Testament Archaeology in which your group domonstrates a basic knowledge of how archaeology has been important for the New Testament and some major discoveries). 2) Three 1 -2 page research papers on three separate artifacts, the first of which is the artifact you recreate. Each of these should be followed by a scale sketch or drawing of the artifact you researched. 3) A Web site your group has created that will display a picture or two of the artifact you are duplicating and your research about this. This Website should be published and a print out of it should be in the third section of your portfolio. Or- a 5 minute power point presentation on your project (Similar to what you did in Geography) Here are some links where you can get free web space and easy directions: http://www.freewebspace.com/ or Geocities free web site or Free Web Hosting 4) CD disk with your website on it (Can be placed anywhere in the portfolio where it can be secured). Rubrics: 1 inch margins, 12 point font, double spaced. Blue or black type. Pictures are nice, but not necessary. The cover sheet should appear on the outside of the portfolio or be visible as the first page under a clear cover. Be sure to footnote any sources you used to avoid plagerism. Footnotes can be in the form of endnotes, footnotes at the bottom of the page, or source notes which appear at the end of the sentences to which they apply |
The Artifact: 6% of your Bib Lit grade. An artifact is an item which has been excavated or "dug up" and tells us something about how ancient peoples lived. Your artifact must date from Biblical Times (c. 2,000 BC -110AD) From the time of Abraham through the completion of tne New Testament. It must have a demonstrable relationship to the Bible It cannot be an "hypothetical" artifact. In other words, it cannot be something that has not yet been discovered and authenticated, such as "The Holy Grail," or "The Nails of the Cross" or "The Manger of Baby Jesus." We don't have these items and they'd be impossible to authenticate if we did. Choose something that interests you and that directly relates to the Scriptures, preferably something that is on display in a museum and more easily reproduced. The Artifact should look as much like the true artifact as possible, but does not have to be made of the same material. It does not have to be expensive or ornate. It just has to look real. Big is not Better. Expensive not "Excellent" A is for Authentic
and "Attached" to the Bible - A
clear link to some Biblical story, even if it's a Biblical story we did
not spend time on in class.
