The Decalogue

Exodus 20 & Deut 5.
 
 



 

Preamble:  I am the Lord Your God Who Led You Out of the Land of Egypt...

    I.  You Shall Have No Other Gods Besides Me.
    II. You Shall Not Take the Name of the Lord Your God in Vain
    III. Keep Holy the Sabbath

    IV. * Honor Your Father and Mother
    V.  You Shall Not Kill. *
    VI. You Shall Not Commit Adultery.
    VII. You Shall Not Steal.
    VIII. You Shall Not Bear False Witness Against Your Neighbor. *
    IX. You Shall Not Covet * Your Neighbor's Spouse.
    X. You Shall Not Covet Your Neighbor's Goods.



        Notes:
        IV. * This is the only command that has a promised reward attached to it.
        V. * Means the taking of an innocent human life ("murder")
        VIII. Includes ruining another's reputation through calumny  or slander.
        IX.  To"Covet" is not simply to want in the sense of appreciate, but to want with a jealous desire or to stoke the fires of envy in your heart;  A wanting which fosters  resentment and ill will.


        Note that the Protestants and Jews number them differently by separating the second part of the first Commandment and combining the last two commandments.
