The Rock of Jesus and his
Church.
Jesus who spent most of his
private life working as a "carpenter," (builder) knew well how
to establish a lasting building (Matt 7:25) - he needed a "rock"
to anchor his church to. That "rock" (Petros) was Peter, the
fisherman.
In this unit, we explore the Biblical basis for the papacy and
Catholic teaching regarding Peter and his successors.
The Prophets and Advent of Jesus
The coming of the
Messiah (Christ) and our redemption were prophesied in the Hebrew
Scriptures for centuries before Christ's arrival. We focus on the
messianic prophesies of Isaiah, Psalm 22 and Zechariah
which help us recognize the God who is beyond time and space became man
to redeem us from sin and death. The Gospels of Matthew and Luke
supply the
material for the "Infacy Narrative" of the Savior.
The Galilean Ministry of Jesus
The Shroud of Jesus
Born
of the Blessed Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate In the Creed, we
move very quickly from the birth of Jesus to his suffering, death and
resurrection. Why is nothing said of His miracles and
teachings?
Because the purpose for Jesus' coming was to redeem us from sin and
reconcile us to God. As Archbishop Fulton Sheen used to
say:
"You and I came into this world to live. Christ was the only man
born
in this world to die." So it is that studying Jesus' death and
resurrection
is the prerquisite to understanding Jesus' life and teaching.
In this effort, the Shroud gives us and the world an object lesson
in the mystery of his passion and resurrection.
