In case you missed it in class....
Here
is
the Sh'ma:
Sh'ma Israel,
Adonay
Elohenu Adonay Ehad.
Hear O Israel, (the)
Lord
Our God, (the) Lord is ONE.
Translation:
Sh'ma
-
"Hear" as in "Listen UP!"
Adonay -
means "The Lord"
Elohenu -
Our God
Ehad -
ONE
(as in [my] ONE and ONLY.
Reminder: It is found in the Book of
Deuteronomy
chapter 6 , vs 4 Dt. 6:4 and represents the HEART of
the
Covenant between God and the chosen people. This affirmation of
faith
is prayed morning and night by devout Jews - Jesus would have prayed it
daily.
It professes that God is their one and only, just as in marriage
the
spouse is the 'one and only' of the other. It is the perhaps the most
important
statement in the Old Testament
We will pray this daily at the end of our prayer time in class to
affirm
our devotion to God, just as Jesus did.
