Gemini Farm has 'dabbled' in horse rescue for many years, decades in fact. We could always count on one or two horses a year
arriving at the barn in need of a kind hand or a bale of hay. We have shed a few tears for some and jumped for joy with others.
Over the course of the last few months it has become painfully clear that too many horses are in need of more than just the
occasional rescue effort. The economy has left people jobless and homeless and in many cases, at the very least, unable to
keep the animals that were so much a part of their lives in better times. It is because of these animals, who have no control
of their lives and suffer in silence, that we decided to develop and maintain this horse rescue page. Please consider adopting,
leasing or sponsoring one of the rescues on this page. Every time we have a successful placement we have room for one more.
Every time a horse lover who cannot adopt or lease a horse offers to financially sponsor one of the horses on this page it
allows us to use valuable and scare financial resources to rescue just one more. Book mark this web site and visit often.

"". . . the deer, the horse, the great eagle, these are our
brothers. The rocky crests, the juices in the meadows, the body heat of the pony and man — all belong to the same family.
. . . The White Man must treat the beasts of this land as his brothers." Chief Seattle

Rohna, a draft mare that has spent her life working the fields, arrived on 9-26-2009 with her pasture friend Sandy. While
Rohna is a bit thin she is not terrible and getting her back up in good shape should not take a long time.
Rohna will have dental work done and be examined by a veterinarian in the next week to determine what she can and cannot do.
She has a swollen hind leg that looks serious but does not seem to bother her at all. She has a lump on her right front leg...that
also doesn't affect her. She does appear to be slightly off on her left front leg and we will have the veterinarian and a
farrier investigate this issue to determine treatment and prognosis. Rohna is probably pregnant as she ran with a stallion
from June to the end of August.
|
We know that some people might wonder why we are 'bothering' with an old worn out draft horse. We see her as a dear kind soul
who served her owners for fifteen years, helping them plant crops and harvest food for the table. She deserves a retirement
home and her baby deserves a chance at life. She seeks out human companionship and is content to stand by any human hoping
for a scratch behind the ear, or a big hug. She is a gentle and trusting giant
Rohna's leg is slowly improving but the progress is extremely slow. The dentist said that she does need some dental work
but because of her other health issues we are putting that off a couple more weeks. She does have functioning teeth and can
eat normal grain. When we got Rohna her owner said she was seventeen. The dentist says she is twenty two.

If you have a spot in your heart for Rohna, please consider adoption, foster or financial sponsorship. She would really love
the opportunity to have a few years in happy retirement from a life of work. Rohna is owned by Gemini Farm
The Heart of a Horse
When your day seems out of balance and so many things go wrong...
When people fight around you and the day drags on so long...
When parents act like children, in-laws make you think "Divorce"...
Go out into your pasture...and wrap your arms around your horse.
His gentle breath enfolds you, and he watches with those eyes
He may not have a PhD, but he is, oh so wise!
His head rests on your shoulder, you embrace him oh so tight.
He puts your world in balance, and makes it seem all right.
Your tears they soon stop flowing, the tension is now eased.
The garbage has been lifted, and you're quiet and at peace.
So when you need the balance from circumstances in your day...
The best therapy that you can seek...is out there eating hay!!

Buddy
Buddy is approximately 12 years old. He is said to be a Tennessee Walker Cross and is approximately 15.3 hands. Buddy is
a wonderful horse. He is an easy keeper, good with other horses, and really loves people too.
Buddy has navicular a condition that causes pain in the heel of his foot and therefore he may be very lightly ridden depending
on how his feet are feeling. He is very well broke to ride and he neck reins. Even though Buddy is suitable for limited use,
he is a blast to ride and fun to have around.

Sable
Sable is a Saddlebred mare who is in her mid 20s. She is broke to ride and I am told drives too. She was at one time a 5 gaited
horse. She is a nice trail horse. Sable has wonderful manners and is snappy but very respectful to ride. She is best suited
for a rider under 150 pounds as she has a very fine build.
Sable does have limited vision in one eye that may be due to injury and moon blindness. Her vision is fine in the other eye.
Sable is dominate in the pasture so will only be suitable for a home with less submissive horses.

Bella
Bella is a 25 Year old AQHA mare and is approximately 14.1 hands. Bella is a very healthy and active senior mare. She has
good ground manners, is very good with other horses, and an easy keeper. In order to be comfortable, Bella requires front
shoes.
Bella is broke to ride but will require a knowledgeable confident rider as she was used for barrel racing and team penning,
which require a horse to have short explosive bursts of speed and quick turning ability. Bella is no longer suitable for
these events, because of the potential for more damage to her front feet, but could offer the right person some enjoyable
rides.
Bella will be available for lease to an approved home that is willing to manage her properly to get the maximum enjoyment
from this incredibly attractive and kind mare. Please feel free to contact us if you are interested in Bella.

Kirsche
Kirsche is approximately 12 years old and is a grade red roan mare. This mare is 13.3 hands tall. Kirsche is a very easy keeper
and very good with other horses. Kirsche has a history of neglect/abuse which requires her to be placed in an experienced
horse home. Kirsche is not suitable for children or beginners. Kirsche is broke to ride and is gaited. Kirsche knows leg cues
and is very sensitive; she prefers to be bitless. She has weakness in the stifle and best suited for use on level ground.
Kirsche is a bold mare who does not fear much.
The perfect person for Kirsche would be a small confident horsewoman, who can appreciate an intelligent and complex mare.

"What is the use of this fuss about morality when the issue only involves a horse? The first and most difficult teaching
of civilization concerns man's behaviour to his inferiors. Make humanity gentle or reasonable toward animals, and strife or
injustice between human beings would speedily terminate." Dr. Edward Mayhew
