Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe. It is also the simplest of all the atoms -- it has only one electron and one proton. The electron is verly light, and whizzes around the proton so quickly that it appears to be a cloud. The shape of this cloud is the electron wavefunction.

The lowest energy state is the 1s wavefunction, which looks like a spherical cloud. If you give the electron a shove (add energy), you can make it move around faster, and the wavefunction takes on more complicated and beautiful patterns.

Check out a few. Don't forget to spin them around in your browser to get a look at all sides of the wavefunction. Have fun!

On to the wavefunctions!
