I classify sketches as being different from paintings for these reasons:
1) they are immediate;
2) they are quickly done, usually 30-45 minutes;
3) they may or may not be painted;
4) they may be in graphite pencils, watercolor pencils or pen/inks.
5) they are usually but not always in a sketch book with a binder;
6) they are usually but not always on sketch paper of some quality, for example watercolor paper if sketch done
with watercolors, 'dry media' sketchbook if pencils, 'wet media' if acrylic paints or watercolors, that sort of thing.
Whereas paintings are either on canvas, canvas-board, or wood, or masonite, more permanent and intended to be archival quality.
