About Me
I have been interested in photography for more than twenty years.
I started out with a general interest in photography including
landscapes, sports and just about anything else. After acquiring
a 600mm lens about 5 years ago, I've focused my personal work
almost exclusively on nature photography. I especially like photographing
birds and large mammals because I enjoy just watching their behavior,
which I can do for hours at a time, while I'm waiting for the
right shot. I also do a lot of digital manipulations.
Although I am very passionate about my nature photography, have
had exhibitions and sales, and am currently involved with a stock
agency, Index Stock , nature photography is not my primary profession. I find the
sales aspect just too burdensome. I do all kinds of photography
including architectual, products and people, and am available
for just about any assignments except weddings.
My Equipment
I use Nikon equipment which at the moment includes an N90, F3, 600/f4, 300/f4, 80-200/2.8, 35-70/2.8, 24/f4, 100macro/f4, 1.4x and 2x converters. I use a Bogen 3036 tripod which I modified by removing the center post and installing a flat plate to accept a DNPN nature head. The DPNP head, I believe, is no longer being manufactured. It is like a Wimberly type design, but has two vertical arms instead of one. Bogen makes a similar head now, however it seems way too small for the 600mm lens. I believe the best head now for long telephoto work has to be the Wimberley. When I'm not using the 600mm I use a Slik Grand Master Sport M322 tripod and NPC head. I wouldn't know how to describe the NPC head, you'd have to see it, but it's a little like a ball head. I have been using Fuji 100 speed film exclusively, either Sensia or Provia, which I often have to push one stop when using the 600mm lens. If I were buying a new system now I would probably buy Canon. I think they're on the cutting edge with Nikon always lagging behind.
For my digital work and design of my web page I used a Power Computing, Power Tower 200e (a Mac clone) which has a 604e processor, with 224 megs of ram, three hard drives with a total of 8 gigs of space, a Hitachi RasterOps 19" monitor along with an NEC Multisync 4FG 15" monitor (with the mac you can use 2 monitors and the cursor will just slide off one onto the other. I keep my Photoshop pallets all open on the smaller monitor). Most of my scans were done on my Nikon LS-1000 slide scanner. Some of the slides I had scanned onto Photo CD before I got the scanner. I bought a cd writer a little while ago after much trouble with Jazz drives and some trouble with Syquest. I find I just can't trust them. I use Adobe Photoshop for all image manipulation. I used Golive's Cyberstudio Personal Edition to design this page, which is powerful enough for my immediate needs, and easy to use once you get the hang of it.
