Steinway & Sons model B semi-concert grand piano, serial #389,825 made in 1965 in New York City, 6' 10.5" long, satin ebony finish.

This is an all-original instrument, lightly used and well cared for. The piano is in very good condition for its age, except the playing mechanism may need work (see next paragraph); the finish is beautiful with no scratches, fading or other problems. A piano technician who recently tuned and evaluated it says it has an intact soundboard, bridges and pinblock, the bass strings are not dead, and there is only minimal oxidation on the strings and tuning pins. The piano has always been regularly tuned and kept very clean inside and out. The sound is beautiful, with the rich and long-sustaining tone that makes Steinway the instrument always sought after and used by the greatest artists. The pedals work perfectly. A matching adjustable, padded artist bench is included.

This piano was made during Steinway's "teflon era." Teflon bushings can make the mechanism noisy, though this one is not, because of the piano being located near the seashore for many years. This has probably caused swelling of the wood parts, which has made the bushings tight. This has kept them quiet, but has also made the action feel stiff or heavy. The piano can be used as-is for those who prefer or don't mind a heavy action. Most owners of Steinways with teflon-bushed actions eventually have some or all of the parts replaced. An action rebuild can cost from $3000 to $12,000, depending on what work is done and who does it. The low price of this piano takes into account that this work needs to be done; you will see other Steinways of this age and size selling for $50,000. A new Steinway model B retails at $70,700.

The instrument is located on the California coast about 3 hours north of San Francisco. Contact me to arrange a visit to the piano. Buyer must pay for and arrange shipping; I can provide contacts for professional piano movers.
