Teacher would deny a world of knowledge
The first-grade teacher who reports that some elementary teachers may be telling their students that "dinosaurs lived millions (or billions) of years ago" and who is disturbed because this is contrary to the biblical account of creation is, in herself, disturbing.

If our children were denied any information which could be interpreted by some as "contrary to biblical teachings," they would be deprived of the vast storehouse of knowledge which has been accumulated by scientists and archaeologists over the centuries.

Certainly some "discoveries" could be interpreted as contrary to the literal interpretation, but is it better to have the kids ignorant of these things or should they be permitted to draw their own conclusions? This is not coercing them one way or the other, but depriving them of this information certainly is!

Bush tax-cut strategy will stimulate economy
Lately Democrats have complained about President Bush's handling of the economy, saying his tax cuts have caused the slowdown. That's a strange claim for a couple reasons. First, the current slowdown started well before Bush took office. Second, except for a relatively minor portion, his tax cuts have not yet gone into effect.

The truth about the economy is that it's in a natural down cycle. Many experts such as Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan say the downturn was overdue, and was delayed and made worse by some questionable tactics by the prior administration to cause short-term results to look better than they really were.

History has repeatedly shown that cutting taxes is very effective at stimulating the economy. What many have trouble understanding is that reducing tax rates doesn't necessarily reduce tax revenues, especially in the long run. Reducing penalties tends to increase economic activity. Just ask yourself, would you rather have 10 percent of $100 or 5 percent of $1,000?

As usual, the big problem is not revenues but spending. If Washington can't control its generosity with our money, we'll have a situation similar to the 1980s. Tax revenues nearly doubled after Reagan's tax cuts, but spending more than offset the higher revenues. Most new spending was for social programs, not defense as Democrats claimed, even though the media happily passed along that myth.

The figures are available to anyone who wants to check, but unfortunately many prefer to revise history to fit their agenda.

Un-American Chicks getting just deserts
A civil rights attorney has indicated that it is "un-American" for people to shun the Dixie Chicks for what many people consider their "un-American" comments and that radio stations have no right to pull their records. Maybe he's forgotten his junior high school civics lessons because America was founded on the free-enterprise system.

Radio stations have to answer to their sponsors, who in turn have to play to their demographics — in this case patriotic, flag-waving, apple pie-eating, God-fearing country music lovers. Sure, the Chicks have a right to free speech (lots of good men died to ensure this), and we have a right to discontinue contributing to their fame, which provided the stage for them to berate our country on foreign soil during wartime.

Mike Gallagher is hosting a concert in the local area Thursday night to rival the Chicks' opening tour concert at the Bi-Lo Center, which sold out prior to their exercise of free speech. Their promoters have refused any refunds, so I hope many who bought tickets will go to the concert and show their disapproval.

I hope they get booed off the stage. I'm sure the media will be paying close attention. The rival concert will feature the Upstate's own Marshall Tucker Band, and all proceeds are going to the families of our troops. I know Greenville will show its support.
